Mark your calendars!
The Pineywoods National Wild Turkey Federation Chapter (PNWTFC) will present the 30th NWTF Hunting Heritage Banquet on July 28th. We invite you to join us at the Lufkin Civic Center (Pitser Garrison Civic Center) for an action-packed evening as we raise funds to “Save the Habitat and Save the Hunt”. The PNWTFC will have a live and silent auction with great hunting and fishing trips, gun and bucket raffles, a great meal and other exciting action to keep you entertained.
About the Pineywoods NWTF Chapter
In 1988, a group of four, U.S. Forest Service employees were having a sack lunch and talking about the exciting release of 15 Eastern Wild Turkey’s (EWT) on the Davy Crockett National Forest. I was one of these men present and I remember Jim Morphew, a charter NWTF member suggesting that we could charter a NWTF chapter in Lufkin. We did that very thing and named it the Pineywoods NWTF chapter. The mission would be to educate the local public about Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s and NWTF’s efforts to restock EWT in East Texas.
We never dreamed that the chapter would achieve so much success!
For many years, the PNWTFC group has been one of the top fund-raising chapters in the nation. The last 29 years, attendees have enabled the PNWTFC to generate 1.9 million dollars that has helped fund the NWTF mission “Save the Habitat and Save the Hunt”. Many of the dollars have been used on projects in East Texas in the form of making Texas lands better wildlife habitat for hunting. We have been able to leverage each $1.00 dollar we contribute into $11.00 with our great wildlife partners.
The PNWTFC is involved in four important local NWTF outreach events that we have planned in 2018, of which, one has already happened. We are always looking for sponsors or volunteers to be involved with these events.
1. The May 5th Pineywoods Women in the Outdoors Event was hosted by the Winston family in Nacogdoches County at their beautiful log cabin. The ladies who attended enjoyed a Hand Gun Training Class by Wally and Patsy Dunks. Other activities included wild jelly making, Dutch Oven cooking and how to use oils from wild herbs.
2. Coming in September…The Texas State JAKES (Juniors, Acquiring, Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship) will present the 21st Conservation Field Day at Winston Tree Farm. This event has attracted over 2,000 youth over its history.
3. Coming in October…The annual Bream Buster Wheelin’ Sportsman Fishing Event at Lufkin State Supported Living Center. This will be the 16th year that this opportunity for disabled individuals has been held at the Lufkin State Supported Living Center- Woodland Retreat.
4. Coming in December…Our 10th Angelina Wheelin’ Sportsman Deer Hunt on US Forest Service- SFA Experimental Forest, TPWD - Alazan Wildlife Management Area and the Winston Tree Farm will provide hunting opportunities for 25 disabled hunters. Last year, 24 hunters harvested seven bucks and nine doe on this annual fall hunt.
If you are interested in volunteering for sponsorship, providing a class, or participating, contact the number below. These outreach event helps pass on the “Save the Habitat -Save the Hunt” message to youth and adults that attend these events each year.
